What do people say about Surf School Santa Cruz?

Second time going to this school for a joint lesson with my brother-in-law. Sam is a great instructor. Highly recommend

Author: Maxwell Pingeon | Date: 6/29/2026 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

I gave my two grandson’s gift certificates for lessons for Christmas and even though it took a while they finally made it to Santa Cruz. And they had an absolute blast! Both of them had never served before so this was a great experience. Sam did a terrific job with him, they loved it and they both plan on surfing forever now! Thank you for a wonderful experience both with the office and with your instructors I would recommend this to anyone!

Better experience than we could have imagined. Our kids had the best time.

Author: Samantha Evans | Date: 6/24/2026 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

Took a private surfing lesson with two friends and had a great time. The instructors were fantastic, knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely fun to be around. They made the experience enjoyable from start to finish, and we all left feeling like we had learned a lot. Wishing the team all the best! The only area for improvement would be guest interactions from some of the operational staff. As we were wrapping up, one staff member seemed to rush us quite a bit. He started taking my wetsuit off while I was still trying to leave a tip for the instructors and hurried us through the process. He also criticized us for not washing sand off the surfboards, even though the instructors had already taken the boards from us and carried them back to the truck themselves. It wasn't a major issue, but it left us with a less positive final impression after an otherwise excellent experience.Overall, I'd still recommend Club Ed for the quality of the instruction and the great instructors.

S.C. Surf School us great! Easy to book and easy to get out surfing. The team here are all great surfers and better still, they all want to help you learn to surf. It's a mature crew and a fun, mellow vibe! Book it and enjoy!

Had a great experience - there's some argument about whether I got up. "Two feet even if you tanked" seems to mean I did. Whether I did or did not, hopefully I will next time because I will be back.

Unfortunately, no photos, but they are working on getting this added into the experience. I booked a first time EVER surf lesson for myself and my son (7), and we had an AMAZING time!We each had our own instructor, and I felt totally safe and supported as not only a first time surfer, but a bit of a fear of the ocean. My fear was washed away by the ocean quite quickly. Ryan was SO attentive and fun with my son, I was truly impressed. Honestly, Kevin and Ryan were both totally impressive, stellar instructors and fun energy. They literally towed(toed) us out to the waves. I paddled to try and compensate, get the experience haha. I got multiple waves and appreciated the instruction of count down to paddle, stand, ride. The way these guys read the water AND coach, WOW.Highly recommend surfing with this crew.

This was my third time with Surf School Santa Cruz and with Dane, my instructor. I have improved immensely and stand up every time and am learning to make turns. Dane still helps me catch the waves and tells me when to start paddling while also assisting me in techniques to improve. He's a great teacher and love his friendly personality. They have full body wetsuits that keep me warm and dry. I'll be returning soon!

Ryan was super welcoming and all around good vibes; a stellar instructor. He towed me around the entire session, which gave me the luxury to just focus on standing and cruising. He set me up for the perfect sized baby waves and gave me the pushes I needed to build confidence. What a great way to fall back in love with the ocean. ALSO we saw lots of cool wildlife (otter, brown pelican, school of fish, etc)!! 10/10 experience, would highly recommend.

I highly recommend Surf School SC! My granddaughter had her first lesson 1:1 with Tessa, a professional longboarder, and they really bonded. It was a bigger day than she expected but Tessa gently coached her outside the break and she caught a big wave all the way in. Ben was also very patient and accommodating to get us scheduled with Tessa on short notice. The best part was they carefully considered the conditions for the day and made sure the surf, tide, and weather was appropriate for a beginner lesson. Any future lessons will be with SSSC.

I especially appreciate the 1:1-2 instructor-to-student ratio - I received constant feedback, felt safe, and got lots of practice. My instructor Dane was fantastic, picked the perfect waves and gave me the right tips to continuously improve and take the next step. I recently visited my best friend in California, traveling all the way from New Jersey. It was my first time in Cali, and since I've always wanted to learn how to surf--especially living near the water at the Jersey Shore--I knew this was the perfect opportunity. While visiting, we booked a lesson with Surf School Santa Cruz, and I'm so glad we did. From the moment we met our instructor, Ryan, he made us feel comfortable and excited to get out on the water. He stayed right by our side the entire time, offering encouragement and guidance that kept us motivated. Learning to surf with Ryan was such an incredible experience--he's not only an amazing teacher but also truly one of the best surfers out there. If you've ever thought about trying surfing, I can't recommend Surf School Santa Cruz (and Ryan!) enough.

Four of us took a 2 hour lesson with Ryan and Sam. Instead of wasting too much time teaching us on land they gave us a quick in depth tutorial and took us out to the beach. We were all up surfing waves within 20 minutes. The boys were super helpful and provided tips to each of us to help us get better. By the end of the lesson we were all tired but super happy and we can’t wait to get out and surf again! Thanks again for the lesson and tows (using their toes!!) out to the wave. We would recommend to anyone.

I had 2 surf days with the Surf School at Pleasure Point beach and I would definitely recommend them. Booking was easy and they took care of the rest - boards, wetsuit and transportation to the beach. I have surfed before so Dane was very flexible and moved me to a different board to challenge me a bit more. The instructors will also "tow" you out to the waves. I've never had that experience before, but it definitely saves your energy and shoulders for paddling. I will absolutely book with them again when in Santa Cruz.

I grew up surfing but hadn’t had any luck getting my daughter out on a surfboard until today, because she was scared of having the big board when the sets would roll through. She and my younger son went out with Ryan and Sam and had the best time. I am thoroughly impressed by their skill and my kids had a blast. We’ll be back shortly for more lessons.

The instructors are all so kind and patient, not to mention all pro surfers too so they give targeted feedback and constructive comments. (And it’s really cool to get 1-1 time to talk to a professional surfer about their experience/tips and tricks). Over 5 lessons in a few months with the guys here, I went from having never been on a board to confidently paddling out on my own at busy surf spots. I will most definitely be booking more lessons in the new year, thank you so much for inspiring me to surf and for encouraging me to keep learning - even baby steps forward is still progress in this ever humbling sport!
